December 31 Itinerary Change

From Charles Iwanaga Itinerary Change - December 31 Our visit to Knott's Berry Farm has been revised to Excursion TBA. Unfortunately, due to some last minute costs being higher than expected. If families have made plans to visit Knott’s Berry Farm may take their child from the practice site on December 31 for the afternoon on their own (transportation & cost). Please note that this was a difficult decision - with the consideration that it's either all or none. We have noted that Itinerary is “subject to change”. We appreciate your patience and understanding on this matter.

From Mr Riggle: December 19 Update

December 19 Update:

We are now less than a week away from departing on tour...!  Please keep up with updates on the websites as thing are added or changed.

Itinerary Update:  As we mentioned the itinerary is subject to change.   Mr. Iwanaga has been trying to massage the tour budget unfortunately ALL cost are higher than expected - especially the cost of ground transportation.  We thought best not pass along a cost increase but to subtract something out of the itinerary:  Knott's Berry Farm and Genie Plus (performers only) - with much of the itinerary is largely intact.  Please inform other family member/friends who may be planning their time around our activities in the mainland.

Weather Considerations:  The forecast is mostly cloudy between 44 - 66 degrees.  No rain!  Performers may bring an optional "throw away" jacket, sweater or blanket to bring for parade day.  It will be discarded when we reach the parade site and later collected for donation.

Follow the website hasmb.com:  Reminder that the password to the secured page is "roseparade".  Please make sure you complete all forms.  Print the parade medical form to bring on the parade.  Check out the packing list.

Featured in the news:  The Na Koa Ali'i was in the news today on KITV: https://www.kitv.com/news/local/hawaii-all-state-marching-band-prepares-for-prestigious-performance-at-rose-parade-in-pasadena/article_ad09e85c-9e0c-11ee-b724-bbe83a4535a1.html

Please keep up practicing music, continue to walk and get the endurance up.  "Imua, Na Koa Ali'i!".  Hawai'i finest will be showcased soon.

Aloha,

John Riggle, Managing Director - jrlani@hawaii.rr.com

NEW MUSIC!!! DRUM CADENCE!!!

 ALOHA HASMB MEMBERS!

Please check the HASMB Members website under music for "Kawaipunahele" & the Drum Cadence. Kawaipunahele is a short ballad that we will be preforming at The Rose Parade Bandfest.

"Also, most of the bands participate in Bandfest, which is sponsored by Remo, where bands perform their field shows at Pasadena City College's Mack and Jackie Robinson Stadium over two days. Bandfest consists of three shows (one on the first day and two on the second day).[3] A percussion group from Remo leads a drum circle with the audience, who have received complimentary Remo drumheads and sticks prior to the event. The Pasadena City College Honor Band and Herald Trumpets perform first, followed by other bands. All bands are invited to perform at Bandfest, but all do not necessarily perform (typically the university bands involved in the Rose Bowl Game). The band members are treated to lunch from In-N-Out Burger with on-site kitchen-trailers."-Wikipedia

Please download the music and listen to the mp3 provided for your parts. Drummers, take the cadence slow, 1 section a day, don't get frustrated and PAY ATTENTION TO THE STICKING please. EVERYONE!!! Please bring the music with next rehersal.

RECORDING & PRACTICE TIPS

Create a plan and follow it! Having clear goals is key to a good practice session.

USE A METRONOME ALWAYS! If first learning something, it might be helpful to play it out of time to get the right pitches and general rhythm. But then immediately use a metronome to be consistent.

Chunk it up! Don’t wait all day to start your dreaded hours of practice. Play in shorter chunks, 10 to 20 minutes at a time, with breaks to relax physically and mentally. Bad habits thrive and injuries occur when you’re fatigued, so it is better to focus intensely in shorter sessions. Also, begin early in the day. Once you get started, it will be easier to keep adding chunks throughout the day!

The number one thing that will help most any brass or wind player improve their sound immediately is AIR. Whenever possible, I give myself 2 beats to breathe. Find your tempo, count to yourself “1-2-breathe-breathe” and play. It’s that simple. Think of filling up your diaphragm with your first beat of breath, and then filling up the rest of your lungs with your second beat of breath. Work to keep the shoulders nice and relaxed as you fill up with air. Doing this will help you in at least three ways:

1. You establish a solid sense of pulse

2. You can’t help but take a really full breath

3. By bringing in the air in a slower, more relaxed way, it will go out in the same fashion helping to keep your sound more open, relaxed and warm.

I’ve always hated the saying, “Practice makes perfect!” Practice doesn’t make “Perfect”, it makes “Permanent”. My practice tip, especially for young people: Slow down and isolate the problem spot. If you don’t, you are in essence “permanently” working the mistake into your practicing and therefore into your performance.

If you can hear it, you can play it- practice mentally away from your instrument. This can make your practice time much more efficient.

If you get too frustrated with a particular passage, don’t stress, just come back to it later. Taking a break will help clear you head and you may be inspired with a different approach.

Stay focused. Mindless practice can be worse than not practicing at all.

Record yourself and play the recording back to make it consistently perfect every time.

Make every note you play the most beautiful note you can.
